Annual Referendums

Richmond Town Budget Referendum

Pursuant to Article 5, Section 3 of the Richmond Home Rule Charter, "no later than the fourteenth day of June of each year, the qualified electors shall vote at an annual budget referendum on approval of a municipal budget for the next fiscal year and on approval of the issuance of bonds or borrowing of money pursuant to the laws of the State of Rhode Island."

Chariho Financial District Referendum

Pursuant to Section 3A of the Chariho Act, "Within thirty (30) days after the school committee adopts its final proposed budget for the ensuing year, a budget approval referendum must be held in each of the member towns [Charlestown, Hopkinton and Richmond] on a single day to be determined by the regional school committee. The vote at referendum shall be for the purpose of approving or rejecting the overall total district budget as proposed by the regional school committee, and for approving or rejecting any special warrant items proposed by the regional school committee."

Identification Required

All voters are required to present valid photo identification before voting at the polls. The following are acceptable forms of photo ID:

  • RI driver's license/driver's permit
  • RI voter ID card*
  • U.S. passport
  • Photo ID issued by a U.S. educational institution
  • U.S. military photo ID
  • Photo ID card issued by the United State of the State of Rhode Island
  • Government-issued medical card with photo
  • ID card issued by any federally recognized tribal government

*The Rhode Island Department of State issues free voter photo ID cards to individuals who do not possess any of the forms of identification listed above. See the Department of State’s website for additional information on the program, or call (401) 222-2340.
