Building and Zoning
The Building and Zoning Department is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the land development & subdivision regulations, zoning ordinance, state building code, and housing maintenance and occupancy code. The department plays an important role in land use, environmental protection, and economic growth. The department also provides cooperation and assistance with other Town departments and outside agencies in accordance with the Town charter and Rhode Island state law(s).
Do I Need a Permit?
To see if your project requires a permit, review the list of permit requirements and exemptions.
Online Permitting
Building and zoning permits and form submittals are available through the Town of Richmond's online permitting system.
Inspections
Building inspections are conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Electrical inspections are conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.
Mechanical and plumbing inspections are conducted daily.
All inspections must be scheduled with the Building and Zoning clerk at 401-539-9000 ext. 3.
